Rhaego
Rhaego, the son of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo, is a figure defined entirely by prophecy and loss. Conceived during the first night of his parents' marriage beneath the stars of the Dothraki sea, he is never born alive. Yet his brief, unrealized existence shapes the fates of those around him, serving as the pivot on which Daenerys's transformation from a frightened girl into a dragon's daughter turns. The prophecy that surrounds him, the brutal circumstances of his death, and the void he leaves behind are central to the tragedy of his parents' story and the birth of a new power in the world.
Prophecy and Promise
From the moment Daenerys's pregnancy becomes known, the child is invested with immense significance. The crones of the dosh khaleen, the ancient widows of dead khals, perform a ceremony in Vaes Dothrak where Daenerys must eat the raw heart of a wild stallion to ensure her son's strength. After she forces down the last of the meat, the oldest crone peers into the future and proclaims that the child will be "the stallion who mounts the world." She describes him as a prince as swift as the wind, fierce as a storm, whose khalasar will cover the earth and whose enemies will tremble before him. The prophecy declares that the milk men in the stone tents—the people of the Seven Kingdoms—will fear his name. Daenerys names him Rhaego, after her slain brother Rhaegar, whom Ser Jorah Mormont had called the last dragon. Khal Drogo, hearing the name, approves, seeing it as a good name for the son of his moon of his life. The prophecy becomes a driving force, promising that Rhaego will unite all Dothraki into a single khalasar and ride to the ends of the earth. It is this promise that ultimately moves Drogo to vow to conquer the Seven Kingdoms for his son, declaring he will give Rhaego the iron chair his mother's father sat in.
Death and the Price of Blood Magic
The prophecy is shattered when Khal Drogo is wounded in battle. The wound festers, and as he lies dying, Daenerys, desperate to save him, turns to the captured Lhazareen godswife Mirri Maz Duur. The maegi warns that only death can pay for life, and that the required spell is a dark blood magic. Daenerys agrees, believing the price will be the horse they slaughter. During the ritual, Daenerys goes into labor. The birth is catastrophic. The child she delivers is not a living boy but a monstrosity: twisted, scaled like a lizard, blind, with a stub of a tail and small leathery wings like a bat's. When Mirri Maz Duur touches him, the flesh sloughs off the bone, revealing a body full of graveworms and the stench of corruption. The maegi declares the child had been dead for years. Daenerys later confronts Mirri, who confirms that the true price of the spell was not the horse but the life of the child. The stallion who mounts the world will burn no cities now, Mirri says; his khalasar shall trample no nations into dust. Daenerys realizes she has been cheated, that her son was murdered within her as payment for a life that was not truly restored.
Aftermath and Legacy
Khal Drogo survives the ritual but is left a mindless, hollow shell, a living corpse who cannot speak, ride, or recognize his wife. The khalasar, seeing their leader broken, scatters. Daenerys is left with only a handful of loyal followers. In her grief and fury, she smothers Drogo with a cushion, ending his empty existence. She then builds a funeral pyre, binds Mirri Maz Duur to it, and places her three dragon eggs around Drogo's body. As the flames consume the pyre, Daenerys walks into the fire. The next morning, she emerges from the ashes unscathed, with three newborn dragons clinging to her. The cream-and-gold dragon suckles at her breast, the green-and-bronze at the other, and the black-and-scarlet beast is draped across her shoulders. The dragons are born from the fire, and their birth is inextricably linked to Rhaego's death. The prophecy of the stallion who mounts the world dies with him, but a new, more terrible power is born in its place. Daenerys, who had named her son for the last dragon, becomes the Mother of Dragons, and the loss of Rhaego forges her into a queen who will never look back.
